In a final farewell from the studio, Two Tribes present RIVE, a high-octane, fast-paced shoot-’em-up with the unique appeal of using twin sticks to battle your way through the game.
RIVE offers some old-school gaming, stepping away from story-driven gameplay and focusing on pure, chaotic action. The game is loosely set in a vast derelict vessel, home to a range of environments which will provide you with high-tech challenges to overcome as you blast your way through the game.
You will take control of a spacecraft as you navigate through each treacherous level, taking on a huge mass of robotic enemies whose abilities and skills differ throughout. What’s more, you will have the opportunity to change the behavior of these robots as you come across them and upload ‘hacks’.
Using hacks, you will be able to temporarily turn robots into allies, who will in turn help you to survive the onslaught with a range of helpful skills. These skills include healing, opening any locked doors that you might encounter and fighting alongside you, providing much-needed firepower and a sense of relief from the continual chaos that you will undoubtedly face.
The main focus in RIVE is definitely the combat. Loosely harking back to Metal Slug, you’ll be required to jump and dodge incoming shots, do your best to squeeze past laser beams that will stop at nothing to take you down, and use your sticks to shoot-’em-up in an incredible 360 degrees.
Twin Stick Controls
Though using the twin sticks combo on console seems straightforward enough, it will be interesting to see how it works on PC, Mac and Linux. Though, we’re sure that Two Tribes will get this right and ensure that playing the game is consistently smooth across all platforms, allowing for quick maneuvers and sharp shooting.
Two Tribes’ Farewell
Being such a small release, the information available on the game is limited. Although, one thing is for sure – this game will be the best that the studio has put out in their 15 years in the industry.
Two Tribes have stated that they want RIVE to be ‘absolutely perfect’, as its’ their big send off – their farewell to the gaming world – and they intend to go out with a bang!
