A lone human wakes up on a distant planet hundreds of years in the future, only to find out that humanity’s attempt to colonise Space has seemingly ended in failure. Take control of Joule as she battles alongside trusty robo-companion, Mack, to save mankind from a terrible fate.

Any game that features a robot dog is, in our eyes, an almost instant winner (who doesn’t love robots and dogs, right?). But don’t mistake this for Nintendogs, because ReCore is an all-action shoot ‘em up without a dull moment in sight.
A Dark Future
The game’s story starts like this – you, a young woman, wake up from hundreds of years of cryo-sleep (you know, artificially-induced sleep where the person is frozen, always with dire consequences). And unsurprisingly, things don’t look great, as humanity’s attempts to establish a ‘New Eden’ in the future have failed.
And so, accompanied by your trusty ‘Corebot’ companion, affectionately named ‘Mack’, you set off to save mankind.
Gun, Gadgets & More Guns
This of course involves futuristic guns, a grappling hook, and even more futuristic guns, as you take on a wide range of enemies, from giant robots to strange alien insects. Each enemy presents a unique challenge that will require you to change your strategy as you go along in order to defeat them.
Joule – that’s you – is equipped with a standard blaster with limitless ammo. You can spray ‘n’ pray, or charge the blaster up and unleash a huge cannon-like shot depending on what you need.
Shooting isn’t the only thing you’ll be doing though. The grappling hook is used almost exclusively for solving tricky puzzles (think Prince of Persia meets Uncharted), and your jetpack is sure to provide hours of fun, especially with the beautifully sprawling graphics and scenery.
A Beautiful Shoot-‘Em-Up
You’ll play through a great range of environments in ReCore, all part of the futuristic post-apocalyptic setting, from a huge dusty wasteland that even Mad Max wouldn’t mind exploring, to warehouses and vast technically-advanced gunships.
At its heart, ReCore is essentially a shoot-‘em-up platformer with puzzle elements. The story and progressions look promising enough to keep players hooked for many hours, and it will be interesting to see how your bond with your companions develop as you blast your way through the game.
The most unique aspect of ReCore is the focus on robots and humans working together to save the last of the human race. You can even switch between which one you’re using at any time, bringing an awesome tactical element to the game. As such, a dog isn’t the only helpful robot you’ll encounter – a range of robo-animals (gorillas included) all have unique powers to assist you on your mission.
What makes this game worth buying? Well, members of the studios that built ReCore have previously worked on games such as Megaman and Metroid Prime, and fans of those games will know that the modus operandi of such games is hours of endless blasting fun.
