Guerrilla Games brings us Horizon Zero Dawn, an action-focused role-playing game inspired by hugely popular RPG titles such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Horizon Zero Dawn is set 1000 years in the future, in the world of Horizon, a post-apocalyptic setting which has long since disposed of the vast majority of humanity.
Although, this isn’t your usual post-apocalyptic wasteland. Human civilization has long since been overthrown by nature, leaving the few that remain in a picturesque, forest-filled landscape. However, you shouldn’t let Horizon’s beauty fool you – the human race are no longer at the top of the food chain, meaning the vast landscape is as dangerous as it is stunning.
Horizon: Deceivingly Dangerous
Guerrilla Games have really put some effort into Horizon Zero Dawn’s plot. The development stage saw the studio put a huge amount of time and effort into ensuring that their storyline was the best it could be, with John Gonzalez, who previously produced the storyline for acclaimed title Fallout: New Vegas, hired to write the script.
More than 20 potential stories were created, exploring a number of characters, concepts and plots. However, it was the story of Aloy which eventually made the cut.
Players will take control of Aloy, a young hunter and archer who has been shunned by her tribe, as she travels across Horizon doing everything she can to survive the threat of her enemies. Aside from the rival tribes that want her dead, a new type of enemy also roams the wilderness – the world no longer belongs to humanity and robot, dinosaur-like creatures, known as ‘Machines’, now rule the land.
Craft, Build, Hack, Fight
Horizon Zero Dawn will feature an innovative crafting system, which can be used to combine primitive weapons and tools with electronic components which bring them inline with the game’s futuristic setting. Players will have to loot broken Machines for parts, with higher level monsters providing better bounty, which will subsequently allow you to craft better items.
Better yet, users will also be able to hack Machines, which opens up a world of new ways to fight. Not only will you be able to use these machines to fight your corner, they can also be turned into makeshift vehicles to help you cover huge distances in short spaces of time.
Horizon Zero Dawn isn’t your usual smash-and-grab video game. With a varied tactical combat system, you will have to put plenty of thought into a situation, rather than jumping into a battle with all guns blazing. Players can use a ‘focus scan’ to gather some intel on their target before they attack, including combat level, potential loot and, most importantly, potential weaknesses. Knowing this will allow you to figure out the best way of taking down each foe.
Guerrilla Games have decided against including a tutorial in Horizon Zero Dawn. Just like Aloy, players will be completely alone when they first enter Horizon, leaving them to learn for themselves and figure out what works best for them. The decision is certainly a risk, but it certainly offers players something new.
Filling the Gap Between Skyrim and GTA
You can’t beat an open world in video games, and Horizon is just that. There will be no loading screens and players will be able to go where they want when they want – exploring forests, mountains and the ruins of past human civilizations, as an advanced weather system and day/night cycle transforms the world around you.
Play the story your way. Roam the land exploring your beautiful surroundings, take to the battleground and fight against a variety of mech-enemies, follow the gripping story of Aloy, or embark on the numerous side-quests that will take you across the world of Horizon.
